Celebrate Spring: 3 Outdoor Activities for Seniors

|

Spring is here, and it's time to get out and enjoy the beautiful weather. The physical and mental health benefits of being outdoors are simply unparalleled. It feels great to be outside this time of year, so we have compiled three simple activities to keep you active this spring.

Take A Walk

You don't have to venture very far to reap the benefits of a walk. A nice walk will allow you to get out in the warm spring sun and can do wonders for your overall health and well-being. Make sure to plan a safe route without obstacles and consider walking with a partner or group. If it has been a while since you walked outdoors, be sure to prepare your body with some simple stretching and plan to start slowly with limited routes. You can build up to longer walks if you are comfortable or just keep enjoying short jaunts. Either way, you’ll enjoy being outside and seeing the vivid colors and taking in the bright smells that only come this time of year.

Get Your Hands Dirty

Gardening, no matter how big or small the scale, is a great activity to enjoy this spring. Even if you don't have space for a flower or vegetable garden, you can always pot a couple of plants to enjoy throughout the growing season. Also, some areas may have community gardens where you can enjoy the benefits of gardening and communing with others. Keep in mind, gardening can be challenging, so scale your project appropriately and ensure you have enough help to maintain your plot or container garden.

Enjoy The Birds

Bird-watching is another excellent way to get outdoors and enjoy nature's beauty this time of year. Migrating birds follow the warm weather, making this the perfect time of year to see a wide range of breathtaking species as they travel through your area. Here are a couple of tips to make your bird watching more enjoyable:

  • Binoculars can be helpful, but they aren't necessary
  • A bird-watching guide or app can be useful for identification as species look similar
  • Early morning is a great time to see active birds

We hope you get outside and enjoy this beautiful time of year. We at Careage Senior Living understand there is no substitute for the benefits of sunshine and fresh air. If you would like more helpful tips or information on senior living, keep an eye on our blog.
